    A Message From Chuy

    It is an honor to serve as your State Senator for District 20. As I reflect on this past 87th Legislative Session, I am proud of what we accomplished for South Texas and the entire state. We had important legislative victories and crafted a balanced budget that will pave the way for an educated and healthy workforce and a successful Texas economy.

    As Vice Chair of the Senate Finance Committee, I will continue to put South Texas at the forefront of critical discussions and secure millions of dollars in funding that will help stimulate our local economies. This past session, I fought to protect funding for our local communities and increase crucial services to our most vulnerable populations — the young, elderly, sick, and poor. I fought to better our South Texas communities by successfully passing important legislation related to education, healthcare, water, transportation, jobs and workforce development, veterans, and criminal justice.

    South Texas is increasingly playing a larger role in shaping our state’s future. Now more than ever we need experienced leaders who have the courage to put people over politics and govern with compassion. Though the session is over, Texas continues to face critical challenges. We must continue to work towards a better future for our children.

By putting people over politics, I have focused on delivering real, measurable results that improve the daily lives of our families. From my role on the Senate Finance Committee to the local neighborhoods of the Valley and Coastal Bend, my goal remains the same: to secure the funding and pass the legislation that builds a stronger economy, a healthier workforce, and a more resilient South Texas. Together, we are showing the rest of the state that when we prioritize compassion and courage over partisanship, we create a brighter future for our children and a Texas that works for everyone.

    Before entering public life, Senator Hinojosa answered the call to service as a squad leader in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War (1966–1968). Upon his return, he dedicated himself to his education, graduating with honors from the University of Texas-Pan American before earning his law degree from the prestigious Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

    Senator Hinojosa’s legal career is rooted in protecting the rights of his community. He began his journey as a staff attorney for the Legal Aid Society of Nueces County and served as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Texas. Since 1980, he has maintained a private practice in McAllen, bringing decades of legal expertise to civil and criminal matters.

    First elected in 1981, Chuy Hinojosa has spent decades delivering for his constituents in both the Texas House and the Texas Senate. His tenure is marked by a "people-first" approach, focusing on the complex needs of a growing state while ensuring that South Texas always has a powerful, experienced voice in Austin.

    Senator Hinojosa has authored some of Texas’ most significant laws. He passed the landmark legislation that established the Regional Academic Health Center (RAHC) to train doctors on the border and sponsored the Texas Fair Defense Act. His commitment to justice is further proven by his sponsorship of DNA legislation that has successfully exonerated wrongly convicted citizens.
